Minister Valcourt, and New Brunswick Premier David Alward participated in an event unveiling plans for the new Cormer facility and detailing federal and provincial support for the initiative.

“Our Government is committed to creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity in our communities,” said Minister Valcourt. “Our investment will help Cormer Group Industries establish a state-of-the-art operation in Miramichi and contribute to the Aerospace & Defence sector in New Brunswick. This project will bring significant economic benefits to this region, and will help create jobs and wealth for the Greater Miramichi area.”

The federal funding will help the company establish a facility for Land System Drive Line manufacturing and In-Service Support, which involves the machining, fabrication, repair and overhaul of land vehicle components. The project also involves building improvements and acquisition of equipment.

The Government of Canada, through ACOA, is providing a $1 million repayable contribution to the project under its Business Development Program (BDP).

“I am really happy with our decision to expand operations into the City of Miramichi,” said Sousa. “I give a lot of credit to the provincial government which made a tremendous pitch on why New Brunswick is the right place to be doing business, particularly with respect to the land system centre of excellence.”

Through its plan to rebuild New Brunswick’s economy, the provincial government is investing in the creation of 80 jobs at Cormer Defense, a global firm that will retrofit military vehicles at a new facility in Miramichi.

“The Miramichi's world-class skilled workforce has made this region a destination for global industrial leaders, and I am pleased that Cormer Defense has chosen to grow in Miramichi and New Brunswick,” said Premier David Alward. “This investment fits our focus on job growth in the aerospace and defence industry which is one of our areas of priority in Rebuilding New Brunswick: Growing Together - An Economic Development Action Plan for New Brunswick. I am confident this dynamic addition to the sector will result in subsequent spinoffs and further opportunities in this important industry.”

As part of a 10-year agreement with the company, the provincial government will provide financial support of up to $5.2 million through conditional contributions, forgivable loans and payroll rebates through Invest NB and the Miramichi Regional Economic Development and Innovation Fund.
